Julia Angwin Joins the Brown Institute as an Entrepreneur in Residence

The Brown Institute is delighted to welcome Julia Angwin as a 2023 Entrepreneur in Residence! Since 2021 the institute has been welcoming established founders to work with our students and alumni. These professionals offer insights into building sustainable ventures that explore the intersection of journalism and technology.

Julia Angwin joins the EIR program from The Markup, a nonprofit newsroom she founded that produces meaningful data-centered journalism about technology and the people affected by it.

Before founding The Markup, Angwin led investigative teams at ProPublica and The Wall Street Journal. She is the author of “Dragnet Nation: A Quest for Privacy, Security and Freedom in a World of Relentless Surveillance,” (Times Books, 2014) and “Stealing MySpace: The Battle to Control the Most Popular Website in America” (Random House, March 2009). Angwin has a B.A. in mathematics from The University of Chicago and an MBA from Columbia University.

She is also a winner and two-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in journalism.

Julia Angwin will join our other EIR, Jacqui Cheng, former Editor-in-Chief with Wirecutter. Please help us welcome Julia to the Brown Institute!
