Augmented reality can be a useful tool for presenting readers with interactive visual information on a real-world scale, enabling the viewer to see an object or scene from different points of view.

The field of journalism was one of the first to capture and publish the world in 3D, and news organizations like The New York Times and The Washington Post have dedicated sections for such content on their mobile apps.

In examples seen so far, journalists use AR in cases where scale or a sense of presence can provide new insights about the subject being reported. Successful stories include the New York Times’ simulation of COVID-19 transmission, a visualization of pollution across the globe, and a volumetric video portrait of Ashley Graham (all best viewed on the Times’ mobile app).

In this workshop, we will review the current state of AR in journalism, and best practices for experience design.
