AI Club is a monthly meetup exploring practical, ethical, and reliable uses of AI in journalism.

Join us for our first session, where we’ll hear from journalists and engineers working to support reporting with AI, including the Executive Editor for Data Journalism at Bloomberg. Together, we’ll survey the rapidly evolving landscape of tools available to journalists. This includes everything from transcription and data analysis to working securely with sensitive documents using models that run locally on your computer. We’ll discuss what these tools are good at, where they fall short, and how they are already being incorporated into reporting workflows.

We’ll also introduce our weekly office hours, where CJS students can get hands-on help using AI to tackle reporting and technical challenges throughout the year.

Pizza and refreshments will be provided. All Columbia students are welcome. 🍕🥤

A bit about AI Club

Over the course of the year, we’ll explore practical applications of AI in reporting. From cleaning and classifying data, to performing data analysis and visualization. We will also explore building one-off applications to advance reporting. With the midterms approaching, elections coverage will serve as our central theme.

Monthly meetups will provide hands-on tutorials, guided prompts, and demonstrations of AI tools. Sessions will be led by both working practitioners and staff at the Brown Institute and Tow Center.

Coupled with our monthly meetup will be weekly office hours led by students from Computer Science, who will help think through the various problems that we tackle during the meetup, as well as any other AI questions you might have throughout your time at CJS. Maybe you want to scrape specific filings from the SEC to surface misconduct? Or maybe you want to build an interactive data visualization to better tell a story? Think of these office hours as an opportunity for one-on-one consultation to help you use AI to accomplish a goal.

Anyone from across the Columbia and Barnard communities are welcome to attend.
